03 February 2025
Spire Healthcare consultant, Professor Bhaskar Dasgupta, has been awarded an MBE for his services to people with giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica.
Professor Dasgupta, Consultant Rheumatologist at Spire Hartswood and Spire Wellesley hospitals, is a foremost exponent on giant cell arteritis (GCA), polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) and large vessel vasculitis, and an expert on vascular and MSK ultrasound. With more than 30 years’ experience, he has many achievements to his name, including the introduction of a fast track GCA pathway for patients to reduce sight loss. Professor Dasgupta has also developed a new concept of Point Of Care Rheumatology Ultrasound (POCRUS) to integrate clinical and ultrasound assessment for a streamlined patient pathway.

Having trained in India and then the UK, Professor Dasgupta has been instrumental in founding modern rheumatology services. In addition to his clinical practice, Professor Dasgupta also helped found the Polymyalgia Rheumatica and Giant Cell Arteritis UK (PMRGCAuk), a national charity working to support those living with PMR or GCA in the UK. This remains the only charity to be dedicated to the care of this spectrum of diseases.
HM The King’s New Year Honours List recognises unsung heroes who have made outstanding contributions to their communities across the UK. Receiving this award is a recognition of exceptional work Professor Dasgupta has done and continues to do.
Richard Coggings, Hospital Director at Spire Hartswood Hospital, said: “I am delighted that Professor Dasgupta has been awarded an MBE in the 2025 New Year Honours List for services to people with giant cell arteritis and polymyalgia rheumatica.
