Your consultations

Your initial consultation will take place in an accessible private room, so don’t worry if walking is painful before your knee replacement. During your consultations, we'll:

  • Ask about your medical history
  • Say whether you need an X-ray and/or an MRI or CT scan, so your consultant can examine your knee in more detail
  • Tell you about the different types of artificial knee joints – also called a prosthesis – as well as surgical methods
  • Explain about the different anaesthetic options, and help you choose the best one for you
  • Give you a chance to ask any questions you have about your surgery

Once you and your consultant have decided to go ahead with knee surgery, your physiotherapist will explain your recovery plan.

Knee replacement: your procedure

When you come in for your operation, you’ll be with us for two to five days. You’ll stay in one of our large, bright, private en-suite rooms which has a locked space for your things and entertainment to keep you occupied as you start your recovery.

Here’s what will happen on the day of your knee replacement operation:

  • You’ll meet your consultant and anaesthetist
  • Your anaesthetist will administer the type of anaesthetic that you’ve agreed with your consultant – either a general, where you’re asleep, or a spinal or epidural, where you won’t feel anything below the waist
  • Once it’s taken effect, your surgeon will make an incision in your knee, move your kneecap to one side and begin fitting your artificial knee

Visit our main knee replacement page for more information.
