Your consultations
All your consultations will take place in one of our 17 accessible private rooms, so don’t worry if you have pain when walking. During your consultations, we'll:
Once you’ve decided to go ahead with hip surgery, your consultant will explain your recovery plan. Both your initial consultation and tests at this stage are charged separately to the cost of any treatment needed.
On the day of your procedure, our ward staff will show you to one of our 34 private rooms and get you settled in. You’ll then meet your consultant and surgical team who’ll prepare you for your operation.
Anaesthetic options
You’ll probably have a general anaesthetic, so you’ll be completely asleep. However, sometimes it’s preferable or necessary to have a spinal or epidural anaesthetic, where you’re numb from the waist down. If so, your anaesthetist can also give you sedatives to help you relax during the operation.
During your operation
Your consultant will make the necessary incisions and begin to remove worn or damaged areas of your hip joint. They’ll then fit your new hip and close your incisions. A hip replacement procedure usually takes between an hour to an hour and a half.
Head to our main hip replacement surgery page for more information about the procedure.
When your operation is done, you’ll be taken back to your private room to start your recovery. You’ll go through sessions with your physiotherapist, who’ll recommend certain exercises to get your hips moving again.
Your private room
While you recover from your procedure, you’ll stay in one of our private rooms, which our ward staff will help you settle into. You’ll have all the comforts and conveniences you’d expect to find in your own home, including:
For a hip replacement procedure, you’ll stay at Spire Hull and East Riding Hospital for four to six days.
