I have been working as a Consultant Ophthalmologist in the UK for about five years. I was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at St James University Hospital, Leeds and Honorary Lecturer of Ophthalmology at Leeds University May 2021. I am an expert in the management of complex and challenging cataract cases, using premium and multifocal intraocular lenses, I am also an experienced laser and lens refractive surgeon.
I have a special interest in cornea, external eye diseases, cataract and refractive surgery.
Following basic and higher specialty training in Egypt at the residency programme of the ophthalmology department, Alexandria University Hospitals, I joined the team at Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton for a two-and-a-half-year fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment diseases where I had combined supervision for my PhD thesis between Alexandria University and Brighton and Sussex University hospitals.
I was awarded a PhD in Ophthalmology by Alexandria University in Egypt studying combined cataract surgery with the novel Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) techniques (2020). I did a Master of Science in Ophthalmology studying the use of the new laser technology in wavefront customised refractive correction of complex eyes. I also completed a fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a fellowship of the Royal College of Edinburgh.
Certified by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists as a refractive surgeon through obtaining certificate of laser refractive surgery (CertLRS October 2021). I also act as an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in both FRCOphth exams and CertLRS exams. I specialise in corneal transplants surgery including the most advanced endothelial corneal transplants (DMEK) and lamellar corneal transplants (DALK).
I have published more than 25 articles in international peer reviewed journals including three book chapters and one textbook on cataract surgery. I have contributed to national and international courses and workshops on cataract surgery, laser refractive surgery, immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery, anterior lamellar and endothelial keratoplasty techniques.
