MBChB, FRCS, PhD
Specialises in
I am a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Spire Leeds Hospital, and St James’s University Hospital in Leeds. I graduated from the University of Sheffield Medical School in 2004 and undertook my surgical training throughout Yorkshire prior to being awarded the gold medal for outstanding performance in the Royal College of Surgeons consultant examination. I followed this with a one-year fellowship in the USA in advanced colorectal surgery at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
During my training, I also undertook a PhD in nanobiotechnology, developing an intra-operative imaging system for minimally invasive colorectal cancer resection, leading to multiple publications and prizes. I helped lead a national trial into surgical treatments for haemorrhoids, which was published in The Lancet and for which I won the BJS Best Paper prize at the European Society of Coloproctology.
My specialist interests in the NHS are advanced/recurrent pelvic cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, whilst at Spire I offer treatments for all aspects of benign coloproctology (including haemorrhoids, fistulae and fissures) and carry out general surgery procedures such as hernia repairs, colonoscopy and skin lesion removal.
I am the chair of the Research and Audit Committee for the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, and surgical lead for the Yorkshire and Humber NIHR Clinical Research Network. I am also an elected member of the ACPGBI Advanced Cancer Committee, a Royal College of Surgeons Clinical Tutor and a Trustee of the charity Bowel Research UK.
