I was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon in General Surgery with specific expertise in all aspects of Liver, Gallbladder and Transplantation Surgery at the St James's University Hospital in 2018. I specialise in gallbladder surgery for gallstone disease and liver surgery including liver resection and transplantation for benign and cancer conditions. In addition I provide a wide range of general surgical expertise in abdominal and groin hernia surgery and have a special interest in redo hernia surgery and in complex patients such as immunosuppressed, obesity and kidney and liver disease.
I perform a high volume of gallbladder surgery every year and provide a regional service for Yorkshire hospitals for more complex gallbladder problems, and currently engaged in national initiatives to improve patient safety and quality in gallbladder surgery.
I routinely perform liver resection (open and laparoscopic liver surgery) and liver transplantation in my main NHS practice, can provide second opinions for complex liver and biliary disease, and act as an expert witness for medical legal matters. I am fully experienced and confident in carrying out surgery to excise lumps and bumps of the skin and body and toe nail surgery.
I graduated from the universities of St Andrews and Manchester and completed surgical training in the East Midlands and Leeds. I was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon in Leeds to one of the largest units in Europe providing specialist services in liver and gallbladder disease, published over 60 peer reviewed publications, book chapters and textbooks and present nationally and internationally on a regular basis.
I am currently an Examiner for the University of Leeds Medical School and Faculty Member of the National Organ Retrieval Service Masterclass Training Group and National Councillor for Organ Retrieval at the British Transplant Society. I am committed to shaping the future of surgical practice in liver and gallbladder surgery in the UK and an active member of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain.

In my work as a surgeon, precision and focus are critical, but I've always believed that balance is equally important. Family brings that balance, and time with them reinforces what is important to all of us: health and happiness.
