Diabetes management at Spire Leeds Hospital

A disorder that results in the level of sugar in the blood being too high.

There are two main types of diabetes – type I and type II – type II is the most common and is usually treated through diet, exercise and drug treatment.

Why you might need it

Diabetes is an increasingly common disorder which results in the level of sugar in the blood being too high. This usually occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin. Diabetes can be easily diagnosed through a blood test to measure the level of sugar in the blood.

There are two main types of diabetes – type I and type II – type II is the most common and is usually treated through diet, exercise and drug treatment. Type I diabetes more commonly occurs in young people and always requires treatment of insulin injections.

A number of consultants at Spire Leeds Hospital specialise in treating diabetes.

All of our consultants are of the highest calibre and benefit from working in our modern, well-equipped hospitals.

Our consultants have high standards to meet, often holding specialist NHS posts and delivering expertise in complex sub-specialty surgeries. Many of our consultants have international reputations for their research in their specialised field.

Before your treatment

You will have a formal consultation with a healthcare professional. During this time you will be able to explain your medical history, symptoms and raise any concerns that you might have.

We will also discuss with you whether any further diagnostic tests, such as scans or blood tests, are needed. Any additional costs will be discussed before further tests are carried out.

Blood testing will also used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment with drugs or insulin. Common tests include blood glucose and the HbA1C test. A small sample of blood may be taken and tested in our laboratories.
