My particular interests are the management of dyspepsia (indigestion) and endoscopy; acid reflux disease and its surgical management, all types of hernia surgery (open and laparoscopic), laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder surgery for gallstones), surgery for oesophageal and stomach cancer, nutrition and feeding.

I have been a consultant for just over 10 years and have spent the last 15 years working in full time specialist surgical practice. I specialise in the management of conditions affecting the stomach and oesophagus, endoscopy and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. In recognition of my past and ongoing contribution to research in this area, I have been appointed as Professor within the University of Leicester.

To date, I have performed in excess of 2,000 endoscopies (100-120 each year); 2,000 laparoscopic (keyhole) operations (120-140 each year); 1,000 hernia operations (60-70 each year); 500 stomach operations (50 each year) in both my NHS and private practice.

I am one of the two General Surgery representatives on the Spire Leicester Medical Advisory Committee. I am the Core Surgery Training Programme Director for the East Midlands (South). This involves overseeing the training of young surgeons in the formative years shortly after medical school. I run and convene the patient support group for patients who have undergone stomach and oesophageal surgery for cancer. The group meets every three months at "Coping with Cancer", Helen Webb House, Leicester, LE3 0HH.

I have recently been promoted to Honorary Professor within the University of Leicester (2015), in recognition of past and future contributions to research and teaching. In recognition of my sustained commitment to teaching, I have been made a Senior Fellow with the Higher Education Academy (2014).

I am actively involved in the assessment and quality assurance of medical training. I examine medical students at the University of Leicester, was an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons MRCS exam between 2009-2015, and currently examine for the Royal College of Surgeons Consultant qualification exam (Part III).
