Spire Leicester Hospital celebrates consultant's MBE award in 2025 New Year Honours List
30 January 2025
Spire Leicester Hospital is delighted to announce that Professor David Lloyd, one of their esteemed consultants, has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2025 New Year Honours List. This prestigious recognition highlights Professor Lloyd’s exceptional contributions to the field of surgery and his unwavering commitment to patient care.
With over 30 years of experience in laparoscopic and hepatobiliary surgery, Professor Lloyd has been at the forefront of pioneering minimally invasive surgical techniques. His innovative approaches have significantly advanced patient outcomes, particularly in gallbladder, hernia and liver surgery. Notably, he developed a microwave machine to treat or ablate liver cancers in 2001, enhancing treatment options for patients with multiple liver tumours. He distributed his machine to cancer centres all over the world including the USA, South Africa, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia where he was invited by the Prime Minister to present a machine to him personally. These microwave machines have now been used to treat more than one million cancer patients worldwide and its use has been extended to treat patients with liver cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer and bone cancer.
When he was first appointed in Leicester he set up a children’s keyhole surgery charity and raised over £100,000 to buy paediatric laparoscopic equipment and was the first surgeon in the UK to perform laparoscopic surgery in children. Many paediatric surgeons from several of the UK’s top children’s hospitals came to Leicester to learn his techniques. Hundreds of thousands of children in the UK have now benefitted from laparoscopic surgery.
In addition, he pioneered a new operation to treat groin pain in elite athletes. This is a keyhole procedure known as the Lloyd Release procedure which has been revolutionary in getting elite athletes to return to their sport within weeks. Some of these athletes include Jamie Vardy, Peter Crouch, Scott McTominay, Kasper Schmeichel and even Shane Williams the Welsh rugby star.
