Fibroids are a common complaint for women, they are overgrown muscle fibres in the uterusĀ and can be the cause of painful and excessive menstrual bleeding. If the fibroids obstruct the fallopian tubes this can lead to infertility.
The myomectomy surgery can be carried out either vaginally or abdominally to remove the fibroids. Unlike a hysterectomy the uterus is kept intact and not removed so chances of pregnancy after the treatment is possible. The treatment may be able to be carried out laparoscopically which would reduce the time spent in hospital.
The benefits of removal of the fibroids are less heavy periods and it may also cure infertility or reduce the chances of further miscarriages.
