I have broad experience of general neurological disorders gained through specialist training both in Birmingham and at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London. I have been a Consultant Neurologist since 2003 and my NHS practice in Hereford allows me to keep up to date with the more common neurological diseases while the remaining part of my job in Birmingham consists of specialist clinics in nerve (neuropathy), muscle (myopathy and dystrophy) and other rare diseases.
Birmingham has a long tradition as a centre of excellence for metabolic medicine and I run combined Neurometabolic clinics with other physicians experienced in the management of patients with such disorders.
I undertook four years of research under the auspices of UCL and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London. This included setting up a genetic diagnostic service for skeletal muscle ion channel disorders including myotonia, paramyotonia and periodic paralysis. These disorders are amenable to treatment and medications were also studied. While there, I was able to gain huge experience in the field of neuromuscular disorders.
