I am a fellowship trained Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon who specialises exclusively in spinal surgery. I was appointed as a substantive consultant at University Hospital North Midlands and Royal County in October 2017. I specialise in degenerative conditions and also carry out surgery for major deformity conditions such as scoliosis.
I work in one of the busiest and largest spinal trauma centres in the country and am therefore well up to date with current practice, trends and surgical techniques. I carry out various spinal operations regularly including microdiscectomy, spinal decompression, spinal fusion surgery, anterior and posterior neck surgery.
I perform around 400 spinal procedures a year, but I also focus on conservative management where possible involving physiotherapy, spinal manipulation, and also spinal injection therapy. I also carry out spinal injections independently to speed up the treatment pathway for my patients and avoid unnecessary delays.
I completed my undergraduate training at University College London in 2005, with a BSc (Hons) at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore; my research work has been presented nationally and internationally. I undertook my Orthopaedic training on the world-renown Oswestry and Stoke rotation, gaining CCT in 2016. Prior to taking my consultant post, I have completed a specialist one-year spinal surgery fellowship in Brisbane Australia, which was a fantastic experience personally and professionally. I am also involved in training junior surgeons as a trainer, having completed a Masters in Surgical Education at Imperial College London. Training surgeons of the future is something I thoroughly enjoy and find extremely rewarding.
I am also involved in medicolegal work and have completed various courses for this. I undertake cases involving personal injury, negligence, medical litigation and malpractice. I run my own medicolegal company for this. I thoroughly enjoy learning about the law and am also studying part-time for the LLM in Legal Aspects of Medical Practice at Cardiff University to improve my own understanding and current clinical practice.
