I am a dedicated hand surgery consultant working and training others at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, serving a population of over one million people. I also practise at the Spire Clinic at Droitwich Spa.
I see complex hand, wrist and elbow problems in my general NHS hand clinics in Solihull and Good Hope Hospital (Sutton Coldfield). I also perform general orthopaedic trauma surgery at Heartlands Hospital, sub-specialising in complex upper limb injuries such as fractures around the shoulder and elbow. I am one of the few Orthopaedic hand surgeons who perform high volumes of arthroscopic scaphoid surgery in the country.
Currently, I am the clinical governance lead for trauma and orthopaedics and am a member of the quality and safety panel for surgical specialties.
My hand and plastics fellowship training was undertaken at three world class units: Ganga Hospital India, with Raja Sabapath; Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, with Professor Tonkin; and the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, with Kate Owers and Rupert Eckersley. I have also worked and published research with David Warwick.
I have developed expertise in complex nerve procedures, children’s hand problems, soft tissue hand trauma, including tendon, nerve and arterial repair, arthritis work, including joint replacement and wrist arthroscopy.
My aim is to offer an individualised, multi-disciplinary service in the management of hand and wrist conditions. I work with hand therapists and give due consideration to both surgical and non-surgical options.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Gunaratnam Shyamalan (Shyam) at Spire include:
Orthopaedics
Paediatrics
Other treatments
COVID-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service at Spire Little Aston Hospital.
Consultant Hand Surgeon, University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
I grew up in County Durham, studying at Barnard Castle School. I developed a particular passion for rugby and went on to play for Durham County at School level. I broke my scaphoid bone at school which required surgery, starting my love of hand surgery. I’m still involved in cricket and squash, although I’ve stopped full contact rugby these days as it plays havoc with ones fingers!
The real secret to my success is my wife and two little girls. In a changing landscape, steering our two girls to a happy life is our main goal. We enjoy many activities together; however, if I had to choose a favourite, it would be sailing in the Thames Estuary with the family.
Love all, serve all.
