Virtual consultations:
I am a Medical Gastroenterologist and have gained vast experience in luminal gastroenterology and therapeutic endoscopy (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, ERCP). I trained in the leading units in Wales, London and Liverpool and was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) degree from Liverpool University.
I perform nearly 1,000 endoscopic procedures per year and I'm an accredited colonoscopist for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. I perform advanced therapeutic endoscopy including removal of polyps, Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (a procedure to remove large polyps which would otherwise require surgical resection), dilatation of narrowing in the gullet or bowel (strictures), placement of feeding tubes (PEG insertion) and stent placement in obstructing cancers. Besides Whiston Hospital, I also conduct advanced endoscopy sessions at Aintree University Hospital as a visiting consultant.
I am the core member gastroenterologist of the colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team, which specialises in prevention and management of bowel cancer. I provide the gastroenterology lead for lower GI services. My other clinical interests include management of conditions such as diarrhoea, constipation, irritable bowel, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, coeliac disease, indigestion, reflux disease, abdominal pain, indigestion, weight loss and anaemia.
I am the clinical director (CD) for gastroenterology at St Helens and Knowsley NHS Hospitals Trust, where I was appointed as a Consultant in 2005. As CD I managed all aspects of the expanding department with particular onus on quality improvement, work force planning, finances, governance and national accreditation of the unit (JAG approval).
I am an accredited trainer for endoscopy and a honorary senior lecturer at Liverpool University. I enjoy my role as a Royal College tutor at Whiston Hospital - where I am responsible for the education and training of the junior medical doctors attached to the hospital.
I continue to have an active research portfolio, resulting in publications in peer reviewed journals, national and international presentations, awards and lecture invites. My main research interest is in pharmaco-economics and my research has been presented at national and international meetings.
