I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Liverpool University Hospitals, where I specialise exclusively in hand and wrist surgery. I have particular research interests in the management of wrist injuries and their consequences and the management of wrist arthritis, including wrist replacements. I have a great deal of experience in treating Dupuytren’s disease, carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis of the wrist and hand.
Born and bred in the Northwest I was educated at Byrchall High School in Ashton-in-Makerfield and the University of Manchester where I gained my primary medical qualification in 1992. I also hold a master’s degree in Learning & Teaching in Clinical Practice (with distinction).
I am a fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England, FRCS (Eng) and have passed the intercollegiate exam in Orthopaedics and Trauma, FRCS (Tr & Orth). In addition, I attained a Fellowship in (Plastics) Hand Surgery at Whiston Hospital in 2002.
As well as being a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England I am a member of the British Orthopaedic Association and member of the British Society for Surgery to the Hand. I am also a Faculty Member of the Association for the Study of Internal Fixation and an accredited educator for The Royal College of Surgeons of England. I am an Honorary Associate Professor at The University of Liverpool.
I am an elected council member and trustee of the British Society for Surgery to the Hand. I was awarded the Ellen Vannin Prize by Chester University for Excellence in Education 2005 and have lectured nationally and internationally in Europe, USA and Australia particularly about the treatment of distal radial (wrist) fractures and their complications.
I have published over 30 papers in orthopaedic journals as well as several book chapters. I work as a consultant for two orthopaedic implant companies Acumed and Swemac.
