I was appointed as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon at Aintree University Hospital in 2012. I have developed a primary and revision lower limb arthroplasty elective practice, complex lower limb trauma practice and established services of benefit nationally, regionally and to the trust. My sub-specialist interest in periprosthetic joint infection has been of significant benefit to the unit. I cover a wide range of treatments in which some include, Primary Knee and Hip Replacements, Major/Complex Trauma and Acute Fracture Management. In addition I also specialise within Revision Knee and Hip Replacements, Periprosthetic Fractures, Unicompartmental Knee Replacements, Management of Orthopaedic Infection and Arthroscopic Knee Surgery Sports Injuries.
I specialise in working as a major trauma surgeon in Mersey and Cheshire’s Major Trauma Centre; I am managing the most severely injured patients in the region on a regular basis. I also see patients on the NHS and privately at Spire Liverpool and the Sefton Suite, AUH consulting orthopaedic patients with regards to both elective lower limb problems and trauma related injuries. With my special interest in orthopaedic infection I organise, chair and run the North West Periprosthetic Joint Infection meeting. Approximately 100 surgeons/consultants from across the region attend annually.
I continue to publish widely in peer-reviewed journals on orthopaedics and my chosen subspecialties. Presenting nationally and internationally I am also invited to lecture at hip and knee arthroplasty meetings. Training and selecting the surgeons of the future is important to me: I am on the national interview panel for registrars and teach regularly on two Royal College of Surgeons courses as well as courses on orthopaedic infection, complex hip/knee surgery and FRCS (T&O) revision courses.
Fellowship August 2011 – 2012 Cavendish Hip Fellowship, Sheffield Mr I Stockley, Mr R Kerry, Mr S Buckley. The Cavendish Hip Fellowship is an advanced lower limb arthroplasty fellowship in a tertiary referral centre. It was a twelve month position managing primary and complex revision hip and knee arthroplasty of septic and aseptic aetiology, periprosthetic fractures and total hip replacement for fractured neck of femur. The unit is renowned for managing orthopaedic infections and the position of Cavendish Hip Fellow required a close and effective partnership with microbiologists and radiologists in managing these complex cases. As well as clinical commitments time was dedicated to research, audit and teaching.
