Spire Liverpool Hospital colleagues head to Paris Olympics with Great Britain athletes

- Dr Nigel Jones and Mrs Joanne Banks will be accompanying the national team GB athletes as Chief Medical Officers in both cycling and judo, respectively.
Spire Liverpool Hospital's Dr Nigel Jones will be traveling to Paris for three weeks alongside team Great Britain at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Dr Jones was appointed as the British Cycling’s first Chief Medical Officer back in August of 2017, he has also previously worked for Liverpool FC and the Rugby Football Union as the Senior Doctor. In his role for team GB Nigel will look after the athletes for Road, Track, Mountain bike and BMX events. This is his second Olympics with the team; he was also at Tokyo 2020.
Nigel said: “It's an honour and a privilege to be looking after the cycling athletes of team Great Britain at the Paris Olympics, I always endeavour to provide the same level of care to my patients at Spire Liverpool Hospital as I do to those who I look after in elite sports.”
Joanne Banks whilst at Spire Liverpool Hospital is a renowned consultant Orthopaedic Knee, Sports and Trauma Surgeon. She is also Chief Medical Officer for the team Great Britain Judo athletes. This is her fourth Olympics and second with team Great Britain.
Jo said: “It’s an honour to be working with such a dedicated group of athletes. Judo is a tough sport with no off season, so these guys are competing all year round. Spire hospitals help a lot with national judo athletes. Spire Hospitals up and down the country will help with scans and tests and I bring athletes to Liverpool for operations for use of the Hospitals outstanding care. Judo is a very popular sport in France, so it will be a high-profile event this year, very special for the team to be competing in Paris, we are hoping to come home with some medals.”

These consultants play a huge role in the day to day activities here and I’m sure they will be just as vital in the function of the national teams during their times out in Paris.”
