Specialises in
I graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1997 and trained in Surgery and Urology in the North West of England, culminating in the award of the Keith Yeates Gold Medal for outstanding performance in the FRCS(Urol) examination. During this period of training I was awarded a post-graduate research doctorate, MD, in 2008, for studies in the molecular staging of prostate cancer.
Appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital in 2009, I perform the breadth of general urology, while my sub-specialist interests are in Endo-urology (telescopic surgery) and Urinary Tract Stone Disease (stones in the kidney, ureter or bladder). I offer a full range of treatment interventions for urinary stones, including minimally invasive techniques and non-invasive shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL).
Stone prevention strategies are a critical consideration for patients with stones which are an integral part of my practice. I have also gained further specialist stone experience in the UK through the Ralph Shackman Travelling fellowship, and internationally in stone centres in Paris, Amsterdam and Turin.
I am an enthusiastic teacher with an extensive portfolio in education and training, supported by a post-graduate diploma in Medical Education from the University of Manchester. I am an Associate Dean within Health Education England North West, providing oversight and assurance around medical training and I am the Educational Director for Greater Manchester Cancer Academy, focusing on the training and development of a multi-professional urology workforce.
As the Trust Associate Director of Medical Education and Royal College of Surgeons Tutor, I provided oversight of surgical training and established the Physician Associate training programme at Salford. Nationally I have contributed to the quality assurance of Urology training through roles on the Urology Specialist Advisory Committee and Joint Committee on Surgical Training. As a member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons and roles with the Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Examination, I have been involved in examination and assessment in surgical and urological training.
My other major professional interest is in professional standards, doctors in difficulty and revalidation - leading medical appraisal and revalidation at Salford Royal for many years, and more recently being appointed as Responsible Officer for the Northern Care Alliance with responsibility for the entire medical workforce. Beyond this I have delivered a range of operational and strategic leadership roles at trust and Greater Manchester system levels.
I am part of a multidisciplinary team, which includes two female urologists, offering a comprehensive range of treatments for a variety of urological conditions.
