I am a Consultant Urological Surgeon and Bolton NHS Foundation Trust's Lead for Men's Health. I am nationally recognised for my expertise in the assessment and management of men's urinary symptoms.
I specialise in general urological surgery with specific interests in all aspects of men's health. Within this role I have pioneered innovative approaches and improved patient pathways, including the assessment and management of men with urinary symptoms, surgical treatments for benign prostatic enlargement, and the delivery of surgical procedures under local anaesthetic (including hydrocele repair, urethral stricture management, bladder cancer laser ablation and minimally invasive surgical therapies for benign prostatic enlargement.
In the treatment of enlarged prostates, I am currently the only surgeon in the North-West of England who offers all available minimally invasive treatment options. These include UroLift (Prostatic Urethral Lift), Rezum (Water Vapour Thermal / Steam Ablation Therapy), and iTIND (Temporarily Implanted Nitinol Device), and am similarly one of only a few in the country experienced in delivering these under local anaesthetic. Also offering the additional treatment options of Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), and Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), I pride myself on offering patients the procedures most suited to them, their needs and their anatomy.
I am an enthusiastic advocator of HoLEP, which offers significant benefits when compared to the conventional TURP treatment for larger prostates. These benefits include reduced bleeding and length of stay in hospital, and increased removal of obstructing prostate tissue resulting in longer lasting treatment benefit.
I advise the Greater Manchester Clinical Reference Group on this procedure, and in my NHS practice treat many of the largest prostates in the region, receiving referrals from other urologists across Greater Manchester and Lancashire for patients needing this treatment. Similarly, in my expertise in the assessment for and delivery of minimally invasive surgical therapies of the benign enlarged prostate has resulted in both similar referrals and my being invited to teach on this nationally and internationally.
Having previously chaired the British Association of Urological Surgeons Section of Trainees, I am heavily invested in medical education, achieving a Distinction in Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, and being a writer for the Royal College of Surgeons of England’s membership examinations. I am currently the Head of the regional rotational training programme for Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration Fellows, supervising urology junior doctors across the region seeking to qualify as Urology Consultants.
Academically, I have achieved a Distinction in my Master of Science (Urology) for my work on the assessment and surgical management of men with urinary symptoms, and have published multiple articles and book chapters across the breadth of urology. These include the subjects of prostate cancer, urinary stone disease, reconstructive urology, and urological education. I am regularly invited to speak and chair sessions at both national and international conferences, including at events for the British Association of Urological Surgeons. I similarly organise and run urological courses that attract attendees internationally.
