Virtual consultations:
I have been a Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon now for over 10 years and have almost 25 years' experience in the specialty following my primary qualifications in both Medicine and Dentistry. I have established the temporomandibular joint service at North Manchester and am a founding member of the multi-disciplinary clinic based at MFT.
I established Manchester as one of the eight national centres across the UK for provision of jaw joint replacement surgery and am one of only two surgeons in Greater Manchester who provides this treatment. I am the only TMJ Surgeon in Manchester who provides minimal access arthroscopic surgery of the jaw joint.
My other main specialty interest is skin cancer and reconstruction having been heavily involved in providing this service across both MFT and Tameside for the last 10 years. I am a core member of two skin cancer multi-disciplinary teams and provide the full spectrum of surgical management including complex reconstruction of cancer defects and facial reanimation surgery for nerve damage.
My experience across the whole breadth of head and neck and facial reconstructive surgery has also led to my practice in aesthetic and cosmetic surgery of the face. I have attained my certification in cosmetic surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons and am on the Royal College Register of certified cosmetic surgeons.
As described above, I practice across the whole spectrum of maxillofacial surgery and facial plastics with emphasis on jaw joint replacement, arthroscopy, joint washouts, discectomy, surgery for dislocation, facial deformity and facial asymmetry correction, head and neck skin cancer and reconstruction, scar revision, lumps and bumps diagnosis and surgery, facial cosmetics both surgical and non-surgical, facial pain, wisdom tooth removal, facial pain management, oral medicine and dental and chin implants.
With regards to skin cancer and reconstruction, I have carried out over 3,000 excisions over the course of the last 10 years and regularly audit my outcomes. I have carried out over 300 reconstructions of defects with artificial skin graft templates negating the need for donor site morbidity.
In terms of temporomandibular joint surgery, I am one of only 25 surgeons across the whole UK who is trained in jaw joint replacement surgery and arthroscopy of the jaw joint having established Manchester as one of only eight centres across the UK that provides such a service. Only 200 cases are carried out in the whole UK per year across all centres and I am currently have one of the highest patient cohorts within that group.
I am the Training Programme Director for Maxillofacial Surgery NHS England North West and am responsible for the delivery of surgical training in this specialty across the North West.
I sit on the Specialty Advisory Committee in Maxillofacial Surgery. This is a national committee across the whole UK delegated to by the General Medical Council to deliver surgical training across the country in the specialty of Maxillofacial Surgery.
I am a visiting consultant to the Gibraltar Health Authority and undertake regular clinics there with emphasis on facial pain and temporomandibular joint problems and skin cancer.
In addition to my clinical and managerial work, I am a surgical tutor and placement supervisor with the University of Manchester providing clinical supervision for undergraduate students on clinical placement at North Manchester Hospital.
I am currently the deputy lead of the consultant special interest group within the British Association of Oral and MaxilloFacial Surgeons in Temporomandibular Joint Surgery.
Following qualification in Dentistry and Medicine from the University of Wales, Cardiff I undertook my basic training across South Wales prior to being appointed to Higher Specialist Training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the West Midlands.

As a member of a local branch of a national film and science fiction society I was appointed to the organising committee for a charity event in 1998. The event involved collaboration with a local cinema to host a premiere for a new science fiction film. The premiere was attended by over 200 people and members of the entertainment industry and involved a charity auction of signed memorabilia and props from the film set. On the basis of ticket sales and the auction we were successful in raising over £20,000 for the Christian Lewis Trust.
This national charity is responsible for granting final wishes for terminally ill children and their families. As well as my interest in films and the cinema, I regularly enjoy badminton and squash, having previously represented my school in Badminton. Recently, I have become more involved in basketball with both my sons playing for both local and national league teams.
