Mr Matthew Liew celebrates 50 HoLEP procedures at Spire Manchester Hospital
20 January 2025
Mr Matthew Liew celebrates his 50 HoLEP procedure milestone by sharing Professor Carvalho's experience with the procedure.
Professor Carvalho says, "After experiencing troubling symptoms such as increased urination, frequent nighttime urination, and bladder retention, I decided to consult a urologist. The recommendation was a TURP procedure, but I wanted to explore other options before committing to such a significant surgery. That’s when I found Mr Matthew Liew.
What stood out to me about Mr Liew was his expertise in the HoLEP procedure, a minimally invasive treatment that uses laser technology to remove excess prostate tissue. After reaching out via email, I was impressed by the prompt response from Mr. Liew, who left me a detailed voicemail within 24 hours explaining that, based on my symptoms, I might be a suitable candidate for HoLEP, but this would be confirmed after a full consultation.
I visited Spire Cheshire Hospital for my initial consultation with Mr. Liew on April 8, 2024. During our meeting, he confirmed that I was indeed eligible for the HoLEP procedure, and we agreed to schedule it for late May. However, due to my travel commitments, we rescheduled the procedure to August 19, 2024, which Mr Liew accommodated with no issues.
The day of the procedure, I attended Spire Manchester Hospital. I had already completed all the preoperative information through the My Spire app, which I found extremely user-friendly. My hospital admission was smooth and efficient, and I was impressed by the high level of care I received from the staff. Mr Liew visited me promptly on the ward and explained that I could go home the following day, but as my private insurance covered a two-night stay, I opted to remain for an additional night for extra peace of mind. Mr Liew was more than happy to accommodate this.
Post-surgery, I experienced very little pain, and the ward staff provided clear guidance on who to contact should I have any concerns. When I did have a follow-up query, Mr. Liew personally reached out to me, which made me feel reassured and valued as a patient.
I’m delighted with the outcome of my HoLEP procedure. My symptoms have significantly improved andI no longer feel the urgency to urinate, and my flow rate is now optimal. The personalised care I received from Mr Liew was exceptional. He truly is a pioneer in his field, and I’m grateful for the expertise and compassion he provided throughout my treatment.
Both Spire hospitals I visited were outstanding, and I would highly recommend Mr. Liew and the team to anyone seeking treatment for prostate issues."
Mr Matthew Liew, Consultant Urologist says, 'I am really pleased that we have completed the milestone of 50 HoLEP cases at Spire Manchester since starting the North West service this year.
Patients like Prof Carvalho have been delighted with the results of their surgery which is personalised to each individual’s preference. My colleagues in clinics, theatre, the wards and physiotherapist who specialises in men’s health have been fantastic and instrumental to the success. We now have another consultant joining the team, Mr Neil Harvey who will further support the HoLEP service at Spire Manchester Hospital.
What I hear from patients time and time again is that they wish they were assessed and treated much earlier. I do hope those reading similar articles on men’s health, and other events will help improve awareness of treatment options of the bothersome symptoms of enlarged prostate.
HoLEP is one of several surgical treatment options for prostate enlargement offered at Spire Manchester. The benefits of HoLEP have been long established, and it is considered the new gold standard operation for treating prostates of any size"
Mr Liew has consultations on Wednesdays at Spire Manchester, and offers a rapid access prostate assessment clinic.
