- Professor Max Fehily successfully performs his 500th Mako total hip replacement surgery
- Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon is now one of the top three surgeons in the UK in terms of the number of Mako hip replacement surgeries carried out
Mako is a world-leading robotic arm surgical tool that helps surgeons perform highly accurate hip and knee joint replacements. Mako uses state-of-the-art technology to personalise each and every operation using 3D virtual modelling and mapping.
On reaching this incredible milestone, Professor Fehily commented: “it has been an incredible journey going from our first [operation] in 2018 to my 500th procedure and becoming the busiest Mako site in the UK. As a hospital, we have carried out well over 1,000 robotic replacements and the feedback from patients has been fantastic. They report better outcomes, faster return to activity and very high satisfaction."
Professor Fehily reflected on being one of the top three surgeons for Mako total hip application procedures in the UK, saying: “It is a great feeling to reach this milestone in such a short period of time. As a hospital, we have worked incredibly hard to treat patients from all over the UK and internationally. But what matters is how well the patients have done. It is very satisfying to help a patient get back to a quality of life that has been impossible for years.
"Mako plays a significant part in hip replacement surgery and is a game-changer. For the first time, we can accurately plan each patient’s surgery and we have the technology to make sure that the operation goes exactly as planned.”
Paul Morgan, Professor Fehily’s 500th Mako patient said: “I selected Max for my procedure as a lot of online research and statistics directed me to him. In particular, with his management of workload over Covid and his success rate in relation to Mako, Max stood out and was on top of the list in all areas. All of this research showed me signs that I am in good hands and I am pleased to be his 500th patient. Also, having the convenience to access him at a local level was ideal.
He continued: "My whole experience with the Spire Manchester Hospital has been efficient and seamless. The staff have been lovely and made me feel very welcome, pointing me in the right direction each time with a smile. It was also very easy to get in touch with Max’s secretary and have access to the information I needed.
"It has been a smooth process with Spire and my experience had a significant impact on feeling reassured prior to my surgery. I am confident that this service will carry on through the rest of my experience.”
