Procedures offered for knee replacement at Spire Manchester Hospital

At Spire Manchester Hospital, we have wide experience of performing knee replacement surgery in our high-quality facilities.

We also offer some of the latest surgical techniques, which may be beneficial to some patients. This includes Mako robotic assisted technology which provides a personalised surgical plan for joint replacement surgery.

If your consultant thinks it’s right for you, they may perform a minimally invasive knee replacement. This usually means a faster recovery time and less scarring, while still achieving the same outcomes.

We also have six laminar flow operating theatres which regulate air flow to minimise the risk of infection.

Your consultations

For your appointments, you’ll meet your consultant in one of our 18 consultation rooms. All of our rooms are accessible, making things easier if you find walking difficult prior to knee replacement.

Our dedicated orthopaedic consultants specialise in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal (bone and muscle) conditions. Here’s what will happen before your treatment:

  • If you haven’t been diagnosed yet, your consultant may recommend our advanced scanning, imaging and diagnostic technologies to look at your knee and help them understand the cause of your pain or mobility problems - scans may be available on the same day
  • Once you’ve been diagnosed or if you have a referral, your consultant will then discuss treatment options with you
  • Before recommending a knee replacement, they may suggest hydrocortisone joint injections or a knee arthroscopy first

Your consultations give you an opportunity to ask questions and discuss your expectations, needs and desires. Your consultant will then be able to outline a treatment and care plan that’s tailored to you.

Knee replacement: your procedure

On the day of your procedure, our ward staff will show you to your room and get you settled in. If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in our lounge or restaurant while you have your operation.

Your consultant and surgical team will prepare you for your operation.

Anaesthetic options

Your anaesthetist will decide which anaesthetic is best for you. It will probably be a spinal anaesthetic with sedation, where you’ll be numb from the waist down.

Visit our main knee replacement page for more information about the procedure.

During your operation

Your consultant will make the necessary incisions and begin to remove worn or damaged areas of your knee joint. They’ll then fit your new knee and close your incisions.

The operation should take no more than ninety minutes. You’ll start your recovery at Spire Manchester Hospital, staying with us for one to three days.
