Dr Ajay Mathew Abraham

Consultant Rheumatologist

MBBS, MRCP, PhD

Specialises in

  • Rheumatology
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Joint pain

I am a Consultant Rheumatologist and Physician. I was the 'Best All Round Medical Graduate' from Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, India in 2000. I completed my post graduate rheumatology and general (internal) medicine training in Merseyside, obtaining my CCT in June 2013. I spent three years conducting epidemiological research, performing and assessing the use of ultrasound imaging in the evaluation of osteoarthritis. I published papers related to this research work and presented my findings at various national and international medical conferences. This research work led to the award of a PhD degree from Newcastle University in September 2013.

I have extensive clinical experience as a Consultant Rheumatologist and Physician and currently work at Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Spire Murrayfield Hospital, Wirral and Spire Abergele Clinic.

If you have symptoms of joint or muscle pains, I will perform a thorough clinical assessment to help identify the underlying cause for these symptoms. After my clinical assessment, you might require further investigations, such as blood tests and/or imaging tests. I will provide you with detailed advice on management options; this will include advice regarding medications and/or other treatments, such as injection of steroid to individual joints or into the muscle/soft tissue. If you suffer from chronic pain, I can provide expert advice on the benefits and risks of various pain medications.

My current practice involves management of all aspects of rheumatology including:

  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Back pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Gout
  • Inflammatory arthritis
  • Lupus and other connective tissue diseases
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Polymyalgia Rheumatica
  • Raynauds
  • Soft tissue pain conditions (such as bursitis, plantar fasciitis, tendinitis including tennis elbow and golfer's elbow)
  • Vasculitis

You do not require a referral from your GP to attend my clinic. Nevertheless, it would be very useful if you could bring any relevant information (such as your list of medications and past medical problems) or a letter from your GP or other health professionals when you attend the clinic.
