I am a Consultant Cardiologist at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where I was recently nominated anonymously by patients/staff and made a Finalist for the Employee of the Year Award (the only Doctor to do so from over 260 nominations, and over 12,000 nominees). I am a specialist in Heart Failure and Cardiac Imaging and have received several National and International Awards in these fields in recognition of both my Clinical and Research work. I am also an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Liverpool.
I qualified from the Royal Free Hospital and University College London in 2003. Post-graduation, I gained two years additional experience working at the Internationally renowned centre par-excellence, the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust looking after patients with severe heart disease, including pre- and post- Heart and Lung Transplantation. I subsequently completed my Cardiology Specialist training in the East Midlands Deanery, sub-specialising in Heart Failure, Device Therapy (pacemakers and defibrillators) and Cardiac Imaging (Cardiac MRI).
I obtained a PhD from the University of Leicester for my research work investigating Heart Failure and utilising Cardiac Imaging. This research was funded by the National Institute for Health Research (Leicester Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Centre). My PhD work has resulted in numerous awards: The University PhD Prize; Young Investigator Award Runner-up (British Society for Heart Failure) and Early Career Award Finalist - Clinical (Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance).
I was recently awarded a Fellowship of the European Heart Failure Association in recognition of excellence in Clinical Service, Education and Research (only UK Cardiologist and one of 10 worldwide given this honour in 2021). Previously, I was also awarded an NHS Clinical Excellence Award in 2019 for my achievements in going above and beyond in my routine clinical work. As Joint Clinical Lead for the Heart Failure Service at Aintree Hospital (2017-2020), the Service has received National acclaim with ‘Beacon Site’ status being awarded by the National Patient Charity Group ‘Pumping Marvellous’ for the quality of care of Heart Failure patients (2018). The Service also won both the ‘Hospital Team of the Year Award’ and the ‘Divisional Award’ in 2019.
I am regularly invited to and deliver presentations at International Conferences (including the worlds largest Cardiology, Heart Failure and Cardiac MRI meetings). I also have a National Profile, having served on various Committees for the British Society of Echocardiography and authored (co-authored) several National Guideline publications in addition to my multiple, original research journal publications, as well as book contributions.
I am very research active (15 International, multi-centre clinical trials, primarily as Principal Investigator since 2017-2021) and have generated substantial income for the NHS in my roles. I also support the British Heart Foundation through peer reviewing of Grant/Fellowship applications. I am on the Editorial Board of the Ultrasound Journal.
