CQC upgrades Spire Murrayfield Hospital, Wirral rating to 'Good'

21 July 2022

  • Staff praised for their emotional support, compassion and kindness
  • Inspectors describe the service as “safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led”
  • 98% of Spire’s hospitals are now rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’

Spire Murrayfield Hospital, Wirral has seen its rating improve to ‘Good’, following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The CQC carried out an unannounced inspection of services offered at the hospital in April. In its report published today, they rated it ‘Good’ overall. They also rated it ‘Good’ in each of the individual categories; safe, effective, caring, responsive to people’s needs and well-led, and for all of the services it provides for diagnosis, surgery and other treatment.

Prior to today’s report, the hospital was rated ‘Requires Improvement’.

In today’s report, inspectors made particular mention of the care provided by hospital colleagues. They described staff as treating patients with compassion and kindness, respecting their privacy and dignity, and providing emotional support for patients, their families and their carers.

The CQC also noted that colleagues took account of patients’ individual needs, and helped them to understand their conditions and make decisions about their care. Inspectors also commented that staff took care to provide advice on healthy lifestyles to those people coming in for treatment.

The CQC said that the hospital engaged well with patients and the community to plan care to meet the needs of local people. They also stated that patients did not have to wait too long for treatment.

Finally, inspectors cited as outstanding a bespoke education and training programme which the hospital had developed for apprentices to complete alongside their national apprenticeship programme, and the hospital’s track record in treating blood clots.

Today’s uprating of Spire Murrayfield, Wirral, means that 98% of Spire Healthcare’s hospitals – all bar one hospital – are rated ‘Good’, ‘Outstanding’ or the equivalent by regulators in England, Scotland and Wales.

Ben White, Hospital Director at Spire Murrayfield Hospital, Wirral, said: “I’m delighted that the CQC has recognised all of the work that colleagues have done in recent years to put quality, safety and compassion at the heart of everything they do, by awarding us this ‘Good’ rating. I’d like to thank all of our teams and consultant partners for their contribution.

“Our next goal is to build on today’s news, absorb the valuable feedback given to us by the inspectors, and aim for an ‘Outstanding’ rating, next time the CQC visit us.”

Justin Ash, Spire Chief Executive, said, “Over the past few years, we’ve focused on making our hospitals the place to get fast access to high quality diagnosis and treatment, with expert consultants. I’m proud of the whole team at Spire Murrayfield, Wirral for their achievement in gaining a ‘Good’ rating today.”
