An artificial knee joint is used to replace the damaged joint.
At Spire Norwich Hospital, we use trusted and clinically proven knee replacement techniques. Our private Norwich hospital is modern and comfortable, so you can enjoy a stress-free treatment.
During a knee replacement, your consultant will remove damaged parts of your knee and replace them with an artificial joint (called a prosthesis). Knee replacement surgery can help you get back to life without pain, improved mobility and increased range of motion.

Your consultations
For your appointments, you’ll meet your consultant in one of our 12 consultation rooms. All of our rooms are accessible, making things easier if you find walking difficult prior to knee replacement.
Our dedicated orthopaedic consultants specialise in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal (bone and muscle) conditions. Here’s what will happen before your treatment:
Your consultations give you an opportunity to ask questions and discuss your expectations, needs and desires. Your consultant will then be able to outline a treatment and care plan that’s tailored to you.
When you come in for your operation, you’ll be with us for two to five days. You’ll stay in one of our large, bright, private en-suite rooms which has a locked space for your belongings and entertainment to keep you occupied as you start your recovery.
Anaesthetic options
When it’s time for your knee replacement, you’ll meet your surgery team and anaesthetist, who’ll administer the type of anaesthetic you’ve agreed on with your consultant. It’ll be a general anaesthetic or an epidural (spinal anaesthetic) where you’ll be numb from the waist down.
You can visit our main knee replacement page for more information about the procedure.
During your operation
Your consultant will make the necessary incisions and remove parts of your knee joint, then fit your artificial joint (called a prosthesis) and close your incisions. The procedure usually takes up to two hours to complete.
After your surgery, you can start recovery in one of our 49 private rooms. Our comfortable rooms feature homely comforts, so you can relax and recover as quickly as possible. You’ll have:
Our experienced nursing team will give you pain medication if you’re feeling uncomfortable after surgery.
