MBChB, FRCS (Ed), FRCS (Plast)
I graduated MB ChB from the University of Birmingham Medical School and have been a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon to the Nottingham and Derby NHS Hospitals since 1994.
I commenced my intensive training programme in 1988 to become a plastic surgeon, qualifying FRCS (Plast) in 1993 and was appointed as a Consultant in 1994. During this training I was awarded the James Laing Memorial Prize of the British Burn Association, gained a Light-Millard Fellowship at the University of Miami, and with the assistance of a Wellington Foundation Scholarship was able to travel to centres of excellence in plastic surgery in Europe.
I am the senior consultant in the Trent Regional Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery Service which I have had a major role in developing over the last 20 years.
I am a Council member of both the BAAPS and BAPRAS. In addition, I am a member of the British Burn Association, the Craniofacial Society of Great Britain and Ireland and the British Society of Surgery of the Hand.
I am actively involved in teaching and training at national and local levels, and I am responsible for organising and conducting hands on training in Cosmetic Surgery of up and coming plastic surgeons in the East Midlands region of the United Kingdom. I’m also the Consultant Adviser in plastic and soft tissue surgery to both the Royal Navy and Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd.
Because of my passion for raising standards within the cosmetic industry and ensuring protection of the public, I have chaired and participated in numerous cosmetic surgery safety task forces.
Over the last nine years I have led the development of the highly successful specialty specific mutual indemnity scheme for plastic surgeons PRASIS to support improvements in patient care and standards of practice. This scheme is now the largest provider of indemnity for plastic surgeons undertaking private practice in the UK. I was core to the developing of its Code of Practice.
In 2017 I was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by Health Education England (HEE) for excellence in Postgraduate Medical Education.
