I graduated from the Medical School of Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands and completed a PhD at the Cardiovascular Research Institute of Maastricht (CARIM) of Maastricht University.
I trained in both general and vascular surgery in Maastricht and Eindhoven in the Netherlands and spent one year, after completion of training, as senior clinical fellow at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College NHS Trust, London, UK. In August 2011 I was appointed as Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at Groningen University Medical Centre, Groningen, The Netherlands, where I practiced general vascular surgery with an emphasis on complex open, endovascular and hybrid aortic reconstructions.
In December 2015 I moved to the UK to join my family and was appointed as a consultant at University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust. My NHS practice encompasses all aspects of vascular surgery, including aortic endovascular, hybrid and open surgery, carotid and peripheral revascularisation procedures, varicose vein surgery and deep venous stenting. At Glenfield Hospital, I have developed a close collaboration with the cardiac surgeons for the treatment of thoracic aortic pathology involving the arch, including aortic dissections, intramural haematoma and aneurysms, using innovative technologies, such as the frozen elephant trunk device, in a state-of-the-art hybrid operating theatre.
Over the past two years I have restructured the treatment of patients with post-thrombotic syndrome due to iliocaval venous outflow obstructions and May-Thurner syndrome at Glenfield Hospital. I streamlined the local protocol for the diagnosis of ilio-caval outflow obstructions, deep venous stenting and post-procedural follow up and formed a venous multidisciplinary team, bringing together the expertise of vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists and haematologist for the benefit of these patients.
I have a strong interest in research and was awarded a PhD in vascular biology/medicine for pre-clinical and translational research into the role of inflammation in the development of atherosclerosis. Currently I am involved in national clinical trials and clinical systematic reviews, ensuring that my patients benefit from the latest scientific insight/technological developments relevant to vascular disease. As clinical audit lead for vascular surgery within my trust, I oversee efforts to improve standards of care and assure patient safety.
I recently joined forces with three fellow vascular surgeons (Mr Gregory McMahon, Mr Harjeet Rayt, Mr Robert Davies) to create the Circulation Clinic. This partnership allows us to provide unique specialist vascular and endovascular services in the private sector. Our team working model of care allows our clients to benefit from the experience and expertise of four leading vascular surgeons; all complex arterial and venous cases are discussed within our multidisciplinary team (MDT) and managed within a collaborative working environment, including dual consultant operating lists, ensuring our clients are offered the best treatment available.
