Spire Nottingham Hospital achieves milestone with pioneering mitral valve repair procedure

  • Spire Nottingham Hospital now among few independent facilities offering advanced TAVI and TEER cardiac interventions

Spire Nottingham Hospital is proud to announce the successful launch of its TAVI and mitral valve percutaneous repair (TEER) programme using the cutting-edge PASCAL Precision System.

Mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair addresses degenerative mitral regurgitation, a condition where the mitral valve fails to close properly, leading to blood leakage into the heart. This innovative procedure offers a minimally invasive alternative for patients who are unsuitable for open-heart surgery, improving outcomes and recovery times. Spire Nottingham is one of only a handful of sites in the independent sector offering this service

Professor Jan Kovac, Consultant Cardiologist, expressed his enthusiasm for the achievement: "This is a proud moment for our team. The successful implementation of the PASCAL Precision System reflects the dedication and expertise of everyone involved. It is a complex, multi-disciplinary procedure, and we are privileged to work with such an outstanding team. This is a tremendous benefit for our patients”.

Spire Nottingham Hospital continues to expand it’s interventional cardiology and cardiac services, now offering a full suite of percutaneous interventions, including coronary procedures, septal defect closures, TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation), LAA (Left Atrial Appendage) closure, and mitral valve repair.

Natasha Young, Hospital Director at Spire Nottingham, highlighted the impact of this new service: "We are delighted to offer patients access to these advanced cardiac procedures, which are typically only available in larger NHS centres. Our team’s expertise allows us to meet the growing demand for minimally invasive cardiac care, and we are committed to further enhancing the patient journey, from initial assessment through to recovery."

The introduction of the TEER programme underlines Spire Nottingham's commitment to delivering world-class healthcare and ensuring patients benefit from the latest medical innovations.
