Spire Nottingham Hospital maintains its ‘Outstanding’ CQC rating

• Hospital rated as ‘Outstanding’ for surgical services and for being well-led and responsive to people’s needs
• Hospital continues to help ease pressure on NHS waiting lists

Spire Nottingham Hospital has again maintained its ‘Outstanding’ rating following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The CQC carried out an unannounced inspection of surgical services offered at Spire Nottingham Hospital in November 2023. In its report, it rated the services ‘Outstanding’ overall, and for being well-led, and responsive to people’s needs.

In its report, CQC inspectors praised how the care was tailored to meet the needs of individual people and delivered in a way to ensure flexibility and choice for patients. The hospital’s facilities and buildings were described as innovative and met the needs of a range of people, all of whom could access the service when they needed it without having to wait for treatment. The CQC noted that all colleagues were completely focused on the needs of patients and overwhelmingly committed to improving services.

The CQC also said that Spire Nottingham Hospital had delivered outstanding practices including:

• being accredited with an autism inclusion award which demonstrates that the hospital is committed to understanding autism, setting the standard for autism practice and offering excellent support to autistic children and adults
• developing working groups of people from multiple healthcare professions to care for hard-to-diagnose patients. The CQC cited this as an example of collaborative working to improve patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes
• fundraising for the local school, most recently to provide funds for the school’s new sensory room
• having three mental health first aiders
• supporting ‘Community Wood Recycling’
• developing a new critical care resident doctor programme to develop and collaborate with services across the region

In 2023, Spire invested £1.1m in its Nottingham Hospital to launch The Spire Midlands Heart Hub and expand its existing offering of cardiac surgery. With the growing demand for cardiac surgery in the Midlands area, the investment in additional expertise and technology allows the hospital to now perform more complex life-saving surgeries, with the aim of treating over 100 patients each year, from across the Midlands region. The hospital hopes to roll the service out more widely in time, also covering NHS patients. Spire Nottingham is the fifth Spire Hospital to offer cardiac surgery.

The hospital provides surgery, medical care, critical care, services for children and young people, outpatients and diagnostic imaging. The inpatient treatment includes orthopaedics, ear, nose and throat, gastroenterology, general surgery, urology, women’s health, heart treatments and spinal surgery.
