Virtual consultations:
I am a Consultant Colorectal, General and Laparoscopic Surgeon performing colorectal surgery and colorectal operations on the NHS and privately, at The Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust and Spire Parkway Hospital, Solihull.
I have specialist interest in minimally invasive techniques for the management of colorectal and general surgical conditions, including laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) to treat hernias and all colorectal conditions (cancer and inflammatory bowel disease), and novel techniques to treat haemorrhoids (THD), as well as a bowel screening programme.
I am the lead clinician for Colorectal Cancer at the Trust. I qualified in 1998 at Birmingham University with Honours in Surgery. In between junior and senior house-jobs in the Midlands, I lectured in anatomy at Birmingham University. I subsequently undertook a period of research into the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer and submitted a thesis for which I was awarded an MD by Warwick University.
After registrar training in the West Midlands, I secured an Association of Coloproctology of GB&I Fellowship in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery at Leeds, working with Peter Sagar, gaining considerable experience of advanced laparoscopic techniques, including ileo-anal pouches. Additionally, I developed a specialist interest in the surgical management of advanced and recurrent rectal cancer. I have published and presented widely on a variety of colorectal and general surgical conditions.
On completion of training, I took up a post as a Consultant Surgeon in July 2011. I have had a key role in advancing laparoscopic colorectal surgery at Heartlands Hospital and set up a service for patients with locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer. I am the lead surgeon at the Trust for the ACPGBI Pilot Training Programme for Trans-anal TME (TaTME), for minimally invasive rectal resections.
I am also on the teaching faculty of a number of postgraduate courses, and am course director for the Royal College of Surgeons' "Strategies in Emergency General Surgery", and the ACPGBI "M42 Coloproctology for Junior Surgical Trainee" courses. I sit on the council of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, and am the Trust Lead for Audit in General Surgery. I also have a continuing interest in clinical research.
