I qualified from the University of Birmingham in 1997 and am a Colorectal and General Surgery Consultant at Spire Little Aston Hospital, Spire Parkway Hospital and Good Hope Hospital, part of University Hospitals Birmingham Foundation Trust.

I perform laparoscopic (keyhole) operations for bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis), diverticular disease, gallstones and hernia repair. I also treat anal conditions including haemorrhoids (piles), fissures and anal fistulas. As well as more conventional techniques for the treatment of piles, I offer THD (a less painful treatment for piles aimed at tying off the circulation to the piles, using special equipment to identify the circulation).

I also perform colonoscopy and endoscopy of the stomach (OGD/gastroscopy). As well as carrying out a range of colorectal and general surgical procedures, I have a special interest in advanced bowel cancer and peritoneal malignancy.

I treat colorectal and appendix cancer, peritoneal malignancy, anal conditions (piles, fissures, fistulas), hernias, gallbladder surgery, lumps and bumps, peritoneal carcinomatosis, bowel cancer, reduction of wound infection, cardiac complications and nausea and vomiting after bowel surgery, the treatment of anal fistulas.

I was trained in this highly skilled surgery in Basingstoke, a world-renowned centre in the treatment of bowel and peritoneal cancer, and have set up the peritoneal tumour service at Good Hope Hospital - this is the only one of its kind in the Midlands and one of three such units in the UK.

Hernia Q&A

What is a hernia and how are they caused?

Mr Haney Youssef, a Colorectal and General Surgery Consultant, says a hernia occurs when the tummy wall weakens, allowing the inner lining of the tummy to protrude as a lump or mass. Pain, especially dragging or excruciating pain, is the most prevalent symptom.
