New £600,000 CT scanner at Spire Parkway Hospital to speed up diagnoses for NHS and private patients in the Solihull area

12 September 2024

The £600,000 investment will provide more rapid diagnoses for more people than previously possible, helping reduce the region’s diagnostic waiting lists.

Using the latest AI technology, the new CT scanner will produce higher quality and more detailed diagnostic images which will help our consultants deliver quicker and more accurate diagnoses.

Computerised tomography (CT) scanners are used by radiographers to diagnose a wide range of conditions including cardiac, neurological, oncology, gastrointestinal and orthopaedic issues, in adults and paediatric patients. This scanner allows for certain scans to be completed in a single rotation, which provides a quicker and more comfortable experience for patients. The scan table is also able to accommodate bariatric patients, so they can also be imaged more safely and comfortably.

Patient engagement

The refurbished CT scanner suite also includes a range of distract views on the ceiling and changeable LED lights in the room – all to help provide a calming environment for patients of all ages. The distract views were chosen by patients at Spire Parkway Hospital, during a recent Patient Feedback Forum.

The CT scanner is just one example of how Spire Parkway Hospital is continuing to invest in technology and facilities to provide rapid access to the latest treatments for the local community.

Mrs MacHale-Rickard, one of the first NHS patients to be scanned using Spire Parkway Hospital’s new CT scanner, said: “I was always nervous in hospitals, but I was made to feel safe and re-assured by the excellent staff. The whole process was explained clearly, and I found I was totally at ease. The CT room was light and airy, and the CT machine was quiet. Overall, a very good experience.”

Insured patients will benefit too from Spire Parkway’s investment. Mrs Pheasant, an insured patient who had their CT scan performed in the new machine, commented: “The staff in the department were friendly and empathetic. The facilities (including the scanner) are modern and efficient. The whole process of having the CT scan went very smoothly.”

Emily Montgomery, Hospital Director at Spire Parkway Hospital, added: “Spire Parkway Hospital is committed to making sure everyone has access to a swift diagnosis and treatment. Investing in state-of-the-art facilities, like our new scanner, enables us to deliver the level of care our patients have come to expect and deserve.”
