Virtual consultations:
My main surgical interests are sports-related injuries of the knee including chondral damage, meniscal damage and ligament reconstruction. I perform a high volume of joint replacement surgeries which include both total and unicompartmental knee replacement surgery. I also run a one-stop knee pain clinic on Monday mornings offering fast tracked consultation, diagnosis (MRI scan) and treatment advice in one 2 hour visit.
My main drive through medical school studies was to perform sports-related surgery. During my training at King's College London I had good exposure to all aspects of medical care with a specific focus to knee surgery achieving my University of London MBBS in 1992.
My orthopaedic training was also predominantly spent on the South Coast. I became a Specialist Registrar in 1998 after a year of research at Portsmouth NHS Trust. During my training I worked in Southampton, Bournemouth, Poole and Basingstoke as well as Portsmouth.
In 2003 and 2004 I spent a year in Australia, purely designated to sports injuries of the knee. I was a Sports Knee Surgeon at SportsMed SA, a private institution in Adelaide. I gained significant experience in all aspects of knee surgery, in particular, ligament reconstruction, arthroscopy, meniscal repair, chondral resurfacing and unicompartmental and total knee replacement surgery.
During this time I undertook numerous research projects which resulted in many publications and international presentations. I became a Consultant Knee Surgeon for Portsmouth NHS Trust in 2005.
My philosophy is to provide a friendly patient based service. The quick diagnosis and implementation of a correct treatment plan is essential to restore function. Not all knee problems require surgery. Some conditions self resolve, others need physiotherapy while other conditions respond to injection therapy. I work closely with numerous rehabilitation centres (physiotherapists) on the South Coast. I perform outpatient clinics with physiotherapists in multiple centres all over the Portsmouth area. I have my own designated anaesthetist, Dr Anu Bali. Dr Bali provides an excellent service both pre-operatively and post-operatively.
