Why you might need it

The liver is the second largest organ in the body and performs over 500 functions, like cleaning your blood and removing toxins. And there are very few symptoms or signs of liver disease until it’s at a very late stage.

Cirrhosis (excess scarring or fibrosis of the liver) has become much more common in the UK over the last few years. It can be caused by years of drinking alcohol, being overweight or having diabetes, known as a fatty liver. Some patients may develop tiredness, itching or non-specific aches and pains but most appear outwardly well.

It’s very important to diagnose liver fibrosis at an early stage, so you can get effective interventions or treatments, and avoid long term complications.

Preparing for your treatment

We aim to make your experience with us as easy and relaxed as possible.

The procedure

A Fibroscan uses a technology known as transient elastography to measure the stiffness of the liver. This gives an accurate guide to the amount of scar tissue (fibrosis) present.

You simply lie on a couch, and the Fibroscan device is held over your liver while readings are taken. The process is non-invasive and painless, and takes around 10 minutes.

Aftercare

The Fibroscan results are available instantly, and your consultant or nurse will discuss the results with you. You might need further diagnostic tests. Any additional costs will be discussed before further tests are carried out.

Liver Health Check

If you have any concerns about your liver or feel you may be at risk, simply call to book your Liver Health Check.

Your Liver health check will take about 30 minutes and will include an assessment of your individual risk factors for liver disease and a Fibroscan to check for live fibrosis.

Results are available immediately and he nurse will discuss your results with you.

If further investigations are recommended you can choose to be referred to our specialist consultant or your results can be provided to your GP.
