The damaged hip joint is replaced with a new, artificial one.
At Spire Portsmouth Hospital, our consultants use trusted, clinically proven hip replacement techniques. Hip replacement is a common operation to have done privately.
The procedure improves mobility by replacing parts of worn, damaged hips with an artificial joint (called a prosthesis). We also offer expert aftercare and physiotherapy in our clean, modern facility.

Your consultations
Before your treatment, you’ll meet your consultant in one of our 15 consultation rooms, located on the ground floor. They’ll ask about your health, symptoms and answer any questions you may have.
If you haven’t been diagnosed yet, they may recommend our diagnostic tests and scans to help them assess your hip in more detail.
If you decide to go ahead with treatment, your consultant will advise you about:
Your consultant and surgical team will prepare you for your operation.
Anaesthetic options
When you’ve had time to settle into your private room, your anaesthetist will administer a general anaesthetic, where you’re completely asleep, or an epidural (spinal anaesthetic) where you’ll be numb from the waist down. If you’re having an epidural, you can also have sedatives to help you relax.
During your operation
Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will make one or more incisions in your hip, remove both the socket and the top of your thigh bone and replace them with a new artificial hip joint. A hip replacement surgery usually takes an hour to an hour and a half.
Your private room
When you come in for your operation, you’ll be with us for three to four days. You’ll stay in one of our 48 large, bright private rooms, which will include:
Friends or family can wait in our restaurant during your operation.
What happens
You’ll receive pain relief medication to help you recover in comfort. Your physiotherapist will get you moving as soon as you feel ready and will provide exercises to help you make the most of your hip replacement.
When you’re ready, your physiotherapist will help you walk again and provide exercises to boost your recovery.
