Your consultations

Your initial appointment will take place in one of our 15 accessible consultation rooms, so don’t worry if you have difficulty walking. During your consultations, we'll:

• Ask about your medical history
• Say whether you need an X-ray, and/or an MRI or CT scan so your consultant can examine your knee in more detail
• Tell you about the different types of artificial knee joints – also called a prosthesis – as well as surgical methods
• Explain about the different anaesthetic options, and help you choose the best one for you
• Give you a chance to ask any questions you have about your surgery

Once you and your consultant have decided to go ahead with knee surgery, your physiotherapist will explain your recovery plan.

On the day of your operation, our ward staff will show you to your own private room.

If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in our restaurant while you have your operation.

Anaesthetic options

When you’ve had time to settle into your private room, your anaesthetist will administer a general anaesthetic, where you’re completely asleep, or an epidural (spinal anaesthetic) where you’ll be numb from the waist down. If you’re having an epidural, you can also have sedatives to help you relax.

During your operation

Your surgeon will make one or more incisions and remove damaged or worn parts of your knee joint. They’ll then insert your new prosthetic joint. The operation should take around two hours. You’ll probably stay with us for three to four days after your operation, until we feel you’re ready to go home and continue your recovery there.

After your surgery, you can start recovery in one of our 49 private rooms. Our rooms feature comforts and conveniences you’d expect in your own home, including:

• TV with Freeview
• Wardrobe
• Window

Our nursing team will provide pain relief and make sure you’re comfortable while you recover.
