Spire South Bank Hospital reaches milestone of performing over 500 robotic surgeries

- Mr Nadim Aslam, Consultant Orthopaedic SMART Robotic Surgeon at Spire South Bank Hospital, has completed over 500 Mako robotically assisted surgeries, revitalising those who had previously suffered from hip or knee pain living within the Three Counties.
In 2022, Spire South Bank Hospital was the first hospital in the region to gain the state-of-the-art robotic Mako system and has since transformed how hip and knee replacement surgeries are performed. Mr Nadim Aslam has now reached the milestone of completing over 500 Mako operations at Spire South Bank Hospital, and this figure continues to grow.
Mako-assisted surgeries offer several benefits to patients, including an increased level of precision, swift recovery times and reduced pain levels compared to traditional joint replacement surgeries. The use of Mako during an operation helps the surgeon to minimise the trauma to the hip or knee, whilst preserving the maximum amount of healthy tissue.
Mr Serrell, who recently underwent Mako-assisted hip replacement surgery under the care of Mr Aslam, said: “Prior to having surgery I was in so much pain from my hip that I could barely walk - each step was agony. My wife called Spire South Bank Hospital to make an appointment with Mr Nadim Aslam, two days later I saw him and 5 weeks later I had surgery. His reputation went before him and for me there was no other option. I had the operation and the relief from pain was instant; I was walking upright within a number of days. For my sins I do several antique programmes for the BBC - prior to my operation filming was so painful - now it is so much easier. Added to that walking around 18 holes of golf is a pleasure though sadly the operation has done nothing for my handicap! All in all just the best result, better than I could have hoped for, and the Spire facilities make you feel far removed from being in hospital.”

Mr Nadim Aslam, Consultant Orthopaedic Robotic SMART Surgeon at Spire South Bank Hospital, commented on his achievement: “I am delighted to have performed over 500 successful robotic cases, making me one of the leading robotic surgeons in Great Britain. Mako robotic-arm assisted surgery is the gold-standard of joint replacements, allowing for a faster recovery and performed up to 2-3 times more accurately than traditional surgery. I will continue to deliver exceptional first-class care to our patients with the best outcomes possible.”
Dawn Pickrell, Hospital Director at Spire South Bank Hospital, added: “Since successfully integrating the Mako robot into our surgical practises in 2022, we continue to offer the best possible care to our patients at Spire South Bank Hospital. This is a huge milestone for our hospital, and I congratulate Mr Aslam and the team on this remarkable achievement.”
