Worcestershire based surgeon performs 300th robotic surgery at Spire South Bank Hospital

26 June 2024

Back in 2022, Spire South Bank Hospital became the first hospital in the region to gain the revolutionary robotic Mako system - transforming how hip and knee replacement surgeries are undertaken. Since then, Mr Nadim Aslam, Consultant Robotic Hip and Knee SMART Surgeon, has reached the milestone of performing over 300 Mako operations.

Mako-assisted surgeries offer a number of benefits to patients, including an increased level of precision, swift recovery times and reduced pain levels compared to traditional joint replacement surgeries. The use of Mako during an operation helps the surgeon to minimise the trauma to the hip or knee, whilst preserving the maximum amount of healthy tissue.

Mr Nadim Aslam, Consultant Robotic Hip and Knee SMART Surgeon at Spire South Bank Hospital, commented on his achievement: “The success of these 300 surgeries is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our colleagues and the remarkable potential of the Mako Robot. I am delighted to have had the opportunity to offer my patients the benefits of this advanced technology and I look forward to continuing to deliver high-quality care.”

Dawn Pickrell, Hospital Director at Spire South Bank Hospital, added: “South Bank Hospital remains committed to leading the way in medical excellence and innovation. The successful integration of the Mako robot into our surgical practices is a significant step forward in our mission to offer the best possible care to our patients. We congratulate Mr Aslam on his remarkable achievement and anticipate the ongoing success of our Orthopaedic services.”
