Liver disease at Spire South Bank Hospital

Liver disease is an increasing problem in the UK.

Patients with advanced liver disease can become extremely unwell. However, if identified early enough, even small changes in lifestyle could help prevent significant liver disease.

Why you might need it

Many people with liver disease are unaware that they have it, as in its early stages there are few, if any, symptoms.

You may be at risk of liver disease if:

  • Have jaundice
  • You are overweight
  • Suffer from high blood pressure
  • Have diabetes
  • Consume a higher than recommended alcohol consumption
  • Have been exposed to certain viruses that can cause liver disease

People suffering from advanced liver disease can become unwell. If identified early, even small changes in lifestyle could help prevent significant liver disease.

Before your treatment

You will have a formal consultation with a healthcare professional. During this time you will be able to explain your medical history, symptoms and raise any concerns that you might have.

We will also discuss with you whether any further diagnostic tests, such as scans or blood tests, are needed. Any additional costs will be discussed before further tests are carried out.

Preparing for your treatment

We've tried to make your experience with us as easy and relaxed as possible.

For more information on visiting hours, our food, what to pack if you're staying with us, parking and all those other important practicalities, please visit our patient information pages.

Our dedicated team will also give you tailored advice to follow in the run up to your visit.

The procedure

We will carry out a full assessment including a full history, clinical examination and assessment of your risk of having liver disease. This may include a frank discussion about alcohol consumption, weight and other factors for liver disease.

Liver blood tests will be performed and, if necessary, a liver ultrasound scan, endoscopy or liver biopsy can be carried out to determine your level of risk. These will help us to assess the best treatment and management plan.

Aftercare

Even after you’ve left hospital, we’re still looking after you every step of the way. After your diagnostic tests for liver disease, a follow up appointment may be required and ongoing monitoring / treatment may be recommended. Your GP can also be informed of the best course of action to continue your treatment plan.

If you have any questions or concerns, we're here to help.
