BM, MRCP
I am a Consultant Rheumatologist at Southampton University Hospitals. I graduated from the University of Southampton in 2000. Following this, my postgraduate rheumatology training was completed in the Wessex region, with accreditation in both rheumatology and internal medicine in 2010. During my training, I completed three years as a clinical research fellow at the Medical Research Council, Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton. This culminated in the award of a PhD for my research into the epidemiology of osteoporosis and childhood bone strength.
I was appointed as a Consultant Rheumatologist in Southampton in 2012 and am currently lead consultant for the biological therapies service for patients with inflammatory arthritis. I also provide a service to Moorgreen Hospital, and a visiting rheumatology service in Guernsey on a monthly basis.
My practice embraces all aspects of rheumatology including inflammatory rheumatic disease, osteoporosis, connective tissue disease, soft tissue rheumatism, spinal pain, and fibromyalgia. I am also interested in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound in the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis.
The rheumatology department of University Hospital Southampton has received several awards for its work; most recently, the EULAR (European League Against Rheumatism) Centre of Excellence award 2020-2025.
My biological therapies service was awarded the inaugural British Society of Rheumatology Best Practice (Outstanding) award, and was selected to represent rheumatology at the House of Lords "Innovation within the NHS" event. I have a keen research interest and have published work in numerous leading medical journals. Through my research I have received awards from the National Osteoporosis Society and the International Osteoporosis Federation. I am also principle investigator on several international clinical trials.
