Dr Sanjay Gupta

I trained at King's College London Medical School and have worked as a consultant at Spire Southampton and Southampton General hospitals since 2006. I am accredited in both anaesthesia and intensive care medicine, therefore able to provide anaesthesia for most operations and any ongoing post-operative critical care requirements. I also work regularly in intensive care to look after both post-surgical and medical patients and form part of a group that looks after critically ill patients at Spire ICU.

My main sub-specialties include major oncological surgery, particularly hepato-biliary (including liver, pancreas and gallbladder) and colo-rectal surgery. I am lead anaesthetist for Delcath Chemosaturation PHP for liver-directed therapy at Southampton with the greatest world-wide experience. I have led in establishing an enhanced sedation service both in the NHS and private hospitals which allows patients to undergo unpleasant procedures (such as endoscopy, interventional radiology and ERCP) with deeper but very short acting sedation.

My NHS work at University Hospital Southampton affords me the privilege of teaching medical students and junior doctors both in a formal setting and also with direct patient care. I am an accredited training proctor with Delcath Chemosaturation and teach this procedure to centres worldwide.

My additional interests include medical technology. I founded a medical app called MICROGUIDE that is currently used by nearly a hundred hospitals both in the UK and abroad. Its purpose is to provide bed-side decision support to medical staff through mobile devices.

I have an active role in the NHS in promoting quality and safety through steering groups and committees where we establish guidelines, investigate adverse events and educate trust staff.
