MBBS, FRCS (ORL-HNS)
Specialises in
I am a senior Consultant ENT surgeon and sub-specialist rhinologist at Spire Southampton Hospital treating both adults and children.
For 24 years, I was Consultant ENT Surgeon and Clinical Lead for ENT at University Hospital Southampton. In December 2024, I decided to move exclusively into working in the private sector at Spire Southampton Hospital.
I undertook my ENT training on the South Coast ENT Registrar rotation, winning the Gold Medal as the outstanding candidate in the Part III FRCS (ORL-HNS) Examination in April 1999.
My ENT Surgical Fellowship Year was undertaken at Groote Schurr Hospital and the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. I spent further periods of training as a Rhinology Fellow in several ENT departments throughout Europe and the USA.
Although trained as a general adult and paediatric ENT surgeon, I recognised that the specialty of ENT surgery had grown enormously, and it was no longer possible to keep up to date and provide a high-quality service in every area of ENT practice, so I moved towards the development of the sub-specialisation of Rhinology, both within my NHS department, and in my Private Practice.
I work closely with my colleagues in the Departments of Respiratory medicine, Plastic Surgery, Maxillo-Facial Surgery and Ophthalmology.
My aim has always been to provide a high quality, evidence-based and patient-focussed surgical practice.
I developed the sub-specialty of rhinology locally through the extended role of minimally invasive (or Functional) endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and I have personally performed many thousands of FESS operations, auditing my results with the use of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS).
I perform Endoscopic DCR Surgery for the management of Epiphora (Tearing) and I undertake Endoscopic Repair of Septal Perforations.
Having undertaken additional training in Facial-Plastic Surgery, I regularly perform functional and aesthetic (cosmetic) Septorhinoplasty (nose-job) via closed and open (external) approaches, along with Pinnaplasty (Ear Pinning) and other facial-plastic procedures.
I was previously Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at Spire Southampton Hospital and was Clinical Lead for ENT Surgery for 12 years at UHSFT.
I continue to undertake research and have published widely in the field of Rhinology.
I work exclusively at Spire Southampton Hospital.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Philip Harries at Spire include:
Ear Nose and Throat (ENT)
Other treatments
COVID-19 testing or antibody tests are not available as a standalone service at Spire Southampton Hospital.
Previously Consultant ENT Surgeon, University Hospitals Southampton NHS Trust
I am a (long suffering) Southampton FC Season Ticket Holder and Saints supporter, keen watcher of rugby union (Wales), I love horse-racing and fly-fishing. My wife is a retired Consultant Paediatrician. I have a long-term ambition to own and manage a small restaurant.
