I am a Consultant ENT Surgeon with a special interest in Rhinology and Allergy. I am trained as a general adult and paediatric ENT Surgeon. I have also developed a sub-specialist interest in Rhinology and Allergy in particular medical and surgical management of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps, rhinosinusitis, snoring, and facial pain.
I perform minimally invasive endoscopic sinus surgery and nasal plastic surgery. I have a major interest in academia, research and teaching. My main research interests focus on the mucosal immune response in nasal airways disease (rhinitis and rhinosinusitis) with the aim of creating a constructive channel between the ENT clinical service and the academic excellence in airways disease mucosal biology at Southampton.
In the next few years, I hope that this liaison will develop further bi-directional benefits in not only establishing an academic presence to develop ENT research but would also facilitate translational research for patient benefit within this area and enabling better understanding of the upper and lower airway interactions.
I graduated from Nottingham University Medical School in 1994. I undertook my higher specialist surgical training in ENT in the West Midlands and Wessex deaneries. During my training, The Royal College of Surgeons of England funded me for three years (2001-2004) to carry out postgraduate basic science research into the mechanisms of inflammation in allergic rhinitis. This research was based in the Infection, Inflammation and Immunity Division of the School of Medicine at the University of Southampton. This work has culminated in a PhD which was awarded in 2005. Subsequently, I was also awarded a Hunterian Professorship of Surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2006.
During my final year of training (2008), I undertook a sub-specialist overseas fellowship in Rhinology & Anterior Skull Base Surgery under the tutelage of Professor Wytske Fokkens at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam. In 2008, I was awarded one of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) Clinical Senior Lectureships. I started my appointment as Senior Lecturer in Rhinology and Honoarary Consultant ENT Surgeon at Southampton University Hospitals in May 2009.
I am a module coordinator for the Allergic Airways Disease Module of the Allergy MSc Course at Southampton University (www.som.southampton.ac.uk/allergy). I am also a faculty member on the internationally renowned Advanced Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Course held in Winchester.
