Treatments for allergic and inflammatory disorders of the nose and sinuses
The Nose & Sinus Allergy Clinic at Spire Southampton Hospital, led by Mr Rami Salib, Consultant ENT Surgeon, assesses and treats allergic and inflammatory disorders of the nose and sinuses. Allergic and inflammatory diseases of the nose and sinuses including rhinitis, rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps are very common conditions, with up to 15% of the population affected. In fact these conditions are more common than arthritis or high blood pressure. An estimated 10 to 50% of patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) suffer from asthma and over 80% of people with asthma experience seasonal allergic rhinitis. The impact of these conditions is often under-appreciated, having a significantly impaired quality of life with sleep disruption, reduced work productivity and poor concentration. The prevalence of allergic disease is on the rise globally and currently up to one in four adults in the UK suffers from hay fever with over half of these people being allergic to grass pollen. Some patients can present purely with lower respiratory symptoms (eg chronic cough, wheeze, chest infections) or with exacerbations of pre-existing conditions such as asthma and bronchitis. It is therefore important to view the upper and lower airways as one unit rather than two separate entities. Whilst many people with these conditions are effectively treated by their GP with a combination of antibiotics, antihistamines and nasal steroid sprays, there are many whose symptoms are not adequately controlled and where specialist referral may be beneficial. The dedicated one-stop Nose & Sinus Allergy Clinic exclusively at the Spire Southampton Hospital, will enable you to seek specialist treatment from a Consultant ENT Surgeon with a subspecialist interest in nasal allergy and diseases of the nose and sinuses.
