CQC maintains Spire St Anthony’s Hospital rating as 'Good'

28 April 2020

  • Report highlights effective governance and dignity in patient treatment at the hospital
  • 88% of all Spire’s 39 UK hospitals are rated as ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’

Sutton-based Spire St Anthony’s Hospital has maintained its ‘Good’ rating, following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors carried out a comprehensive examination into services offered at the 64-bed hospital, including an unannounced visit in October 2019.

The regulatory body rated the hospital across five key areas, examining whether services were safe, effective, caring, responsive to people's needs, and well-led. The hospital received ratings of ‘Good’ across all areas, an improvement on the CQC’s previous inspection findings from 2017, when it rated the hospital as ‘Requires Improvement’ on safety and did not award a rating on effectiveness.

Hospital facilities include seven operating theatres, three wards, an eight-bed intensive care unit (ICU), X-ray, outpatient and diagnostic capabilities. The hospital provides surgery, medical care, critical care, services for children and young people, as well as outpatients and diagnostic imaging.

The report highlighted several areas of good practice, including the way that infection risks are controlled, and how the hospital works effectively with other local organisations to plan and provide care to meet the needs of local people. It also observed the kindness and dignity with which staff treated patients.

Inspectors said leaders operated effective governance processes throughout the service and with partner organisations. Staff at all levels were clear about their roles and accountabilities and had regular opportunities to meet, discuss and learn from their performance.

Across the country, 88% of all Spire Healthcare hospitals and clinics are rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding,’ or the national equivalent in Scotland and Wales.

Richard Coggings, Hospital Director at Spire St Anthony’s, said: “We are very pleased to have maintained our ‘Good’ rating overall and seen our improved systems acknowledged. This reflects the investment we have made in patient safety and quality and the high levels of care delivered by our hardworking and dedicated team.”
