Spire St Anthony’s Hospital hosts Children’s Open Day
22 August 2024
Spire St Anthony’s Hospital invited children and young people for a day of fun, activities and learning about what happens inside a hospital. This included making nurse’s hats, guess the object in the X-ray, learning about the human body, dancing and games with the physiotherapists, dressing up as a surgeon in theatres and sampling the children and young people’s menu.
Children and young people from the local community came together to enjoy the free open morning. The event also provided the hospital’s Children and Young People Team with valuable feedback, helping them to build future experiences that are responsive and positive for young patients.
Attendees also took part in a mystery book draw to fundraise and increase awareness for ‘Ambitious about Autism’. This charity is championed by one of Spire St Anthony’s leading Consultant Urologists, Mr Stephen Gordon.
Spire St Anthony’s Hospital relaunched their Children and Young Persons service in the summer of 2023, providing a specialised surgical service for children aged three and over, and outpatient consultations available from birth for both privately insured and self-funding patients.
The hospital’s refurbished facilities are designed to be child and young person friendly, including a children's waiting room and play area, children’s decorated ward and a dedicated children’s recovery bay for the service. The service is run by a specialised nursing team, supporting and guiding children, young people and their families through their healthcare experiences.
Eleanor Barron, Children and Young People Lead Nurse at Spire St Anthony’s Hospital, said: “We know that visiting the hospital can be an unknown and daunting experience for children, especially if they have had difficult past encounters. Our open day provided the opportunity to provide a positive hospital experience, which will ultimately help patients engage with healthcare in the future. Gaining feedback from attendees was immensely useful and we will continue to tailor our service to make a positive difference through outstanding personalised care.”
