Fibroscan uses a technology known as transient elastography to accurately check the liver for signs of fibrosis (scarring) using ultrasound, with immediate results.
A referral letter from a consultant or GP is required before booking any diagnostic investigation.
The liver is the second largest organ in the body and performs over 500 functions, like cleaning your blood and removing toxins. And there are very few symptoms or signs of liver disease until it’s at a very late stage.
Cirrhosis (excess scarring or fibrosis of the liver) has become much more common in the UK over the last few years. It can be caused by years of drinking alcohol, being overweight or having diabetes, known as a fatty liver. Some patients may develop tiredness, itching or non-specific aches and pains but most appear outwardly well.
It’s very important to diagnose liver fibrosis at an early stage, so you can get effective interventions or treatments, and avoid long term complications.

Our Fibroscan service is led by our highly experienced consultant hepatologist and supported by an expert nursing team. Your Fibroscan is either carried out by your consultant, as part of consultation, or by one of our expert nursing team, usually in the outpatient department.

You will need a referral letter from a consultant or GP before booking any diagnostic investigation.
You will have a formal consultation with a healthcare professional. During this time you will be able to explain your medical history, symptoms and raise any concerns that you might have.
We will also discuss with you whether any further diagnostic tests, such as scans or blood tests, are needed. Any additional costs will be discussed before further tests are carried out.
We aim to make your experience with us as easy and relaxed as possible.
A Fibroscan uses a technology known as transient elastography to measure the stiffness of the liver. This gives an accurate guide to the amount of scar tissue (fibrosis) present.
You simply lie on a couch, and the Fibroscan device is held over your liver while readings are taken. The process is non-invasive and painless, and takes around 10 minutes.
The Fibroscan results are available instantly, and your consultant or nurse will discuss the results with you. You might need further diagnostic tests. Any additional costs will be discussed before further tests are carried out.
