About private healthcare

When choosing whether to go private, you should consider:

  • If the hospital specialises in the treatment you need
  • How you plan to fund your treatment either by paying for yourself or using a health insurance policy which covers the treatment you need
  • Your consultant’s qualifications, accreditations or affiliations with industry bodies, for example the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons
  • Health outcomes data or patient reviews – sources include National Joint Registry and the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN)

Paying for your own treatment

Paying for your own treatment is a quick and easy way to get immediate access to healthcare when you need it. At Spire Healthcare, we offer fixed price packages when paying for treatment yourself, with clear pricing and no hidden charges.

If you want to spread the cost, we can offer you access to a range of finance options that can be personalised based on what you’d like to pay, over how long and how much deposit you’d like to pay.

Using health insurance

You can buy health insurance yourself or it’s sometimes provided through your employer. Usually, a monthly premium is paid (either by you or your employer) and the insurance provider will pay for private treatment, tests and other services if you become ill – so long as it’s covered by your insurance policy.

After your treatment, your private healthcare provider will invoice your insurer directly, allowing you to focus on your recovery.

NHS funded treatment

Private healthcare providers, including Spire Healthcare, often work closely with the NHS. You may receive NHS-funded care at a private hospital if:

Your local NHS trust has contracted the service you require to a private healthcare provider

The treatment you require is covered by the NHS e-Referral Service – if you need to see a specialist or have a procedure that’s covered by the e-Referral scheme, you can choose from a list of private and NHS hospitals that provide the service you need.

Ensuring you receive high-quality care

All hospitals in the UK, whether private or publicly funded, are independently regulated to ensure they meet fundamental standards of quality and safety. Hospitals in England are inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The CQC ensures health and care services provide you with care that is:

  • Safe
  • Effective
  • Compassionate
  • High-quality

Similar inspection services operate in Scotland and Wales through Healthcare Improvement Scotland and Healthcare Inspectorate Wales.
